WORLD HEART DAY

On 28th September a vascular risk health check event was held at Brent Cross shopping centre to mark World Heart Day 2008. The event, jointly organised and hosted by the NC London Cardiac & Stroke Network and cardiac patient panel, provided opportunistic health screening to shoppers. The event was a success with almost 100 people screened in a matter of hours!

The 2007/8 MINAP public report
was released in June, outlining the performance of hospitals, ambulance services and cardiac networks in England and Wales against national standards and targets, for the care of heart attack patients.
The report shows that 90% or more of patients arriving at either the Heart Hospital or the Royal Free Hospital, received a primary angioplasty within 90 minutes of arrival. This compares with a national average of 79%. Similarly, out of 54 hospitals performing primary angioplasty, both NC London centres achieved overall “door to balloon” times (the time taken from the ambulance arriving at hospital to the first balloon inflation inside the coronary artery) of 41 minutes, against the national average of 56 minutes. This is a significant achievement for the NC London sector.
