Arrhythmia Task Group

Context:
An arrhythmia is a disturbance of the normal rhythm of the heart, when it beats too fast, too slow or beats irregularly. This may occur continuously or just occasionally. The average prevalence rate of Atrial Fibrillation (AF) nationally is believed to be between 1% - 3%. In north central London this figure is estimated to be around 1.5% of the resident population.

Aim:
To implement an appropriate pathway of care for patients presenting with an arrhythmia, from early identification of patients in primary care through to treatment and on-going management of patients.

Update:
The Network is implementing the Pan London Cardiovascular Project with the Arrhythmia Task Group providing a platform to discuss and communicate across centres in shaping arrhythmia services for the sector.  All projects are to be completed by end of March 2012 with data monitoring and service reviews to be carried out early in 2013. The following points provide progress to date:

• Quality standards assessments at tertiary centres completed
• Pre-meet quality assessments at DGH’s and where needed at tertiary centres (dates set up or being set)
• Baseline audit to be completed by A&E by the end of February 2012. Capacity planning for Life After Stroke.
• Quality standards assessments for local clinics being set.
